Breaking Ground For Riverside County Youth & Families

We’re celebrating the launch of the Moreno Valley Youth Village permanent supportive housing project for homeless youth and families with children! After more than a year of developing the project vision, funding was secured in April 2022 for the project which aims to provide housing for 8-12 homeless youth or families with young children experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The Moreno Valley Youth Village Project

We are thrilled to announce one of InflectionPoint Design + Development Group’s (IPD2) most impactful projects yet - the Moreno Valley Youth Village - with our partners, the County of Riverside, the City of Moreno Valley, and Sigma Beta Xi: Youth & Family Services (SBX).  Together, on May 21, 2022, our team celebrated the project launch on the 3.79-acre property that will become an affordable, sustainable, and thriving community for transition-age youth (TAY) and families with children that are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The Moreno Valley Youth Village project (MVYV) is the culmination of SBX’s mission to break the cycles of poverty and racism through mentorship and community organizing. Creating safe and affordable housing is a core aspect of supporting healthy lives for the young people they serve. The project received just under $4M in funding through the Riverside County Housing and Workforce Solutions Department, with the support of District 5 Supervisor Jeff Hewitt.

The funding will enable SBX to complete the first phase of their project master plan, which includes the property acquisition, renovation of three existing homes, a new single-family home, and a youth technology learning laboratory. When complete, the project will provide housing for 12 or more TAY youth and families. The property Master Plan, when complete, could provide healthy and secure housing for up to 60 or more residents in a supportive community atmosphere with sustainable design solutions, recreational amenities, and wellness-oriented programs to help residents to build a thriving life.

In addition to providing secure housing, the Project will showcase SBX’s innovative approach to culturally empowering youth mentorship and family support services with on-site access to resources ranging from youth and parenting mentorship and social support services, to innovative vocational training, youth leadership empowerment activities, and Black and Latinx cultural heritage education and rite of passage programs.

The innovative youth technology learning laboratory site is a front-runner to host a new Best Buy Teen Tech Center (a first for Riverside County), through a partnership with Orange County-based Latinx youth education non-profit, Listo America - a leading member of the international MIT MediaLab Clubhouse Network. The Clubhouse network Best Buy Teen Tech Centers provide free access to leading-edge vocational technology equipment and devices with educational mentorship for underserved youth throughout southern California.

Project Team

The Moreno Valley Youth Village story begins with a group of Rialto High School students, who gathered nearly 25 years ago with the support of their mentor and teacher Ernest Rhodes IV and created Sigma Beta Xi (SBX), a youth mentorship and leadership organization. Together, they set out to develop future professional leaders under the principles of wisdom, brotherhood, sisterhood, service, endurance, excellence, and unity.

Over the last two decades, Sigma Beta Xi: Youth and Family Services, Inc. has grown into a leading youth and family services non-profit organization serving the communities of Moreno Valley, Perris, and Hemet in California’s growing Inland Empire region 60 miles east of Los Angeles. Since its founding, SBX has provided more than 40,000 hours of mentoring to more than 1,000 youth representing more than 20 schools throughout the region.

In early 2021, SBX asked IPD2 to lead a project development team to create an affordable housing development to further enhance the services they provide to their community. After more than a year of effort, in April 2022 the Riverside County Board of Supervisors approved $3.9M in project funding to support the Moreno Valley Youth Village phase 1 vision. Using federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act resources dedicated to creating affordable housing solutions to address the growing homelessness crisis exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, the County of Riverside Housing & Workforce Solutions Department made this exciting project possible.
